Background

Scope and content:

The Hamburg Mennonite Church Harmonia Sacra All Day Sing, August 6, 1995, is comprised of two audiocassettes with a recording of a harmonia sacra hymn sing, held at the Old Hamburg Church in Luray, Virginia, on August 6, 1995. The hymn sing is held annually at the Old Hamburg Church on the first Sunday in August.

Biographical / historical:

The hymn sing was organized by the Harmonia Sacra Society, a non-profit organization in the Shenandoah Valley, dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Joseph Funk, a Southern shaped-note hymnal publisher, singing school instructor, and publisher of the hymnal, "Harmonia Sacra." The recording was made by Raymond Brunk, founder of "Gospel Sunrise," an organization that distributes religious cassette tapes to truck stops.
