Background

Scope and content:

The collection is comprised of two volumes of bound posters and programs, advertising events created by the State Normal and Industrial School branch of the YWCA. The posters detail meeting and events hosted from 1909-1916. Meetings were often organized around a topic, and included a musical performance, readings, prayer and songs.

The programs include an "Annual Christmas Pageant" from 1951 and vesper services from 1931, 1948, and 1952.

Biographical / historical:

The State Normal and Industrial School for Women branch of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) was established in 1909, during the first term of the school. There were 72 founding members (representing approximately half of the student body), and it eventually grew to 100 members by the end of 1909. In its first year, the YWCA organized seven Bible-study classes and a mission study class. In its early years, YWCA held weekly devotional meetings and sponsored informal social events for the students.
