Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection consists of one folder which contains email correspondence supporting Shenandoah River cleanup, newspaper clippings (both scanned copies and originals), and newsletters (Virginia Water Resources Research Center "Water News" and Virginia Water Control Board) with articles pertaining to the Avtex Plant and disposal of hazardous materials. The collection documents the attempt to clean up the Avtex Fibers Inc. Superfund toxic waste site in Front Royal, Virginia, 1989- 1999.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The Avtex plant, on 440 acres along the Shenandoah River, manufactured rayon for tires during World War II and rocket nozzle parts for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in the 1970s-1980s. The company's permit to discharge into the Shenandoah River was revoked on November 10, 1989 and the plant was thereafter abandoned, with significant quantities of extremely hazardous materials left on site.
