Willie Lee Nichols Rose was a 1947 Mary Washington College alumna. She went on to earn her PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1964 and became an established historian, joining the faculty at University of Virginia until 1973 and then Johns Hopkins until 1992. She taught and wrote extensively on slavery and the Reconstruction Era in the United States.
