- Biographical / historical:

John C. Wood was elected mayor of the City of Fairfax in 1952 and become the first rector of Mason's Board of Visitors in 1972. In both jobs Wood was a major force in the development of the university and pushed to acquire the land for both the Fairfax and Arlington Campuses.
