The George Mason University Office of University Relations newsclippings and press releases records contains newsclippings pertaining to George Mason University and the Northern Virginia geographic region, as well as press releases produced by the George Mason University Office of University Relations.

This collection documents the nuances of life at George Mason University (GMU) as well as in the surrounding community of Fairfax, Virginia. More broadly it provides insight into the growth and dynamics of Northern Virginia and offers perspective on national trends, politics, and experiences.

Series 1: Newsclippings (1953-2002) documents GMU's evolution from its early years as George Mason College of the University of Virginia to its mature status as a prestigious research university. The collection features news and human interest pieces relating primarily to George Mason University, its related individuals, and the Northern Virginia region. The newsclippings feature information on events at GMU, as well as notable news about the school. The collection also consists of news regarding GMU staff, faculty, and students, including marriage announcements and notable achievements. News articles and editorials written by GMU-affiliated individuals are also included. In addition, the collection also contains newsclippings on state politics largely in reference to higher education budgets as well as local news and events.

Series 2: Press Releases (1956-1997) contains printed press releases, public service announcements, and event calendars disseminated to the GMU community as well as local and regional newspapers. The press releases contain information on such topics as course offerings, conferences, workshops, and administrative announcements. Also included are drafts of the finalized press releases and their attendant research materials.

Formerly known as Public Relations, University Relations serves as the primary communication center and contact point for information about George Mason University.

Donated by George Mason University Office of University Relations in multiple accessions from 1989 to 2014.

8 newsclippings (dating from September 1964 to October 1964) were added to the collection from newsclippings in University publications (R0153). These materials were compiled by the University Relations unit and filed with materials which were university publications. The newsclippings, in terms of content and context, better belonged in R0004.
