Background

Scope and content:

The Hugh Sockett Institute for Educational Transformation Records contains files dating to the inception of the Institute for Educational Transformation to the end of Hugh Sockett's time as Director. Included are files detailing various projects the Institute worked on under Dr. Sockett, from the Urban Alternative to other projects dedicated to helping improve teachers in Arlington, Prince William County and other places across Northern Virginia. There are also documents detailing the change from the academic focus the Institute for Educational Transformation had to the Master's program it became and the Education Quality Fund created under the IET to serve as financial aid for teacher programs and research.

Biographical / historical:

The Institute for Educational Transformation was founded in 1991 by Professor Hugh Sockett and is based in the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University. The purpose of the IET was to support teachers and other educators in conducting research to improve the quality of learning in public schools. The IET also served to build up funds for the Educational Quality Fund, consisting of grants to be given out to teacher researchers. In 1999, the academic IET was abolished and redesigned as a program in the Graduate School of Education named "Masters in New Professional Studies (Teaching)."
