This collection contains the records of Dr. J. Wade Gilley, Senior Vice President of George Mason University at the time. The collection has documents from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Materials in the collection include correspondence, meeting notes and agendas, news clippings, athletic programs, newsletters, budget documents, images, and important policies and procedures documents, among other things. It also includes material pertaining to the George Mason Institute, The Prince William Institute of Applied Systems, and the Virginia Initiative.

Scope and content:

This collection contains the records of Dr. J. Wade Gilley, Senior Vice President of George Mason University at the time. The collection has documents from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Materials in the collection include correspondence, meeting notes and agendas, news clippings, athletic programs, newsletters, budget documents, images, and important policies and procedures documents, among other things. It also includes material pertaining to the George Mason Institute, The Prince William Institute of Applied Systems, and the Virginia Initiative. These are some of the documents you will find in the collection, for a more detailed list of the materials in each box see the contents list below.

Box 1, Contains documents pertaining to athletic and academic support, advertising for athletics, the athletic council, the athletic budget, as well as records on men's and women's basketball.

Box 2, Contains documents on field house use, surveys on revenues and expenses in college athletic programs, notices on revised operating hours for the field house, news clippings on George Mason University athletic facilities, annual report on recreation/sports complex, field house monthly cash reports, bi-annual summary for athletic/sport facilities, field house admission policy and fee schedule, correspondences and news clippings on George Mason's drugs and alcohol policy in regards to athletics, and records on athletic facilities.

Box 3, Contains records pertaining to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). More specifically it has correspondence, workshop and meeting agendas, and NAIA's declaration of intent to participate certificate. In addition, it has correspondence letters, meeting agendas, auditor recommendations, news clippings, and other documents pertaining to the NCAA.

Box 4, Contains records for women's and men's soccer, athletic procedures and policies, athletic registration process, athletic radio, the pep band, and George Mason's shooting team.

Box 5, Contains documents on softball, volley ball, training, tennis, wrestling, and track. It also has other sports information such as memos pertaining to availability of equipment, sports newsletters, and budget documents.

Box 6, Contains correspondence information, athletic programs, articles regarding athletic programs, information on board of director meetings, records from the Bureau of Social Science Research, and records on the Center for the Study of Public Choice.

Box 7, Contains records on the employees Affirmative Action Plan, financial aid, the Krasnow Institute, and the George Mason Institute's Industrial Policy Board.

Box 8, Contains documents on the George Mason Institute (GMI) Policy Board Meeting, GMI's Institute of Science and Technology, GMI Senator's visit, as well as records on meetings and images from board meetings.

Box 9, Contains correspondence, documents on the industrial affiliate program, records from the Institute for Urban Systems Engineering, information on minority retention, as well as records from the Prince William Institute of Applied Systems, the Virginia Initiative, and the Superintendents Business/Industry Advisory Council.

Box 10, Contains documents from the Virginia Initiative's meetings in Roanoke, Richmond, and Danville. This box also has a presentation on "Economic Development in Western Virginia…." that was given at the Wytheville Community College.

Biographical / historical:

The Office of the Senior Vice president handled internal operations of the University, represented the office of the President on numerous internal and external events and activities, served as University representative on the Board of Visitors Committees for Finance and Resource Development and staffed the Land Use and Development Committee, and served as the contract officer of the University, who is responsible for final negotiation of all partnership agreements and competitive negotiations. As the University changed over the years so did the structure of its leadership. This office is no longer in existence.
