Mary Ann Lecos was born and raised in Chicago, IL. She graduated from DePaul University in 1954 and holds advanced degrees in education and educational administration from the American University (1966) and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1980). She has lived in Fairfax County since 1961 and has been an active member of the educational and volunteer community. She served on the Fairfax County School Board from 1969 to 1979 and was the Board's chairperson from 1974 to 1978. In 1976 she was named Washingtonian of the Year.
In the late 1990s Lecos became the Director of Teacher Education and an associate professor at George Mason University in the Graduate School of Education. She was also an adjunct faculty for education leadership programs at the University.
Lecos' involvement with education and volunteering continued overseas when she traveled to Asia, the Middle East, and South America with the U.S. State Department's Office of Overseas Schools to assist in curriculum development, governance and planning. Locally she is the representative for St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and is currently the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) President. Her commitment to volunteer service was recognized in 2002 when she was awarded Fairfax County Citizen of the Year.
