Scope and content:

This collection, which dates from 1978 to 1997, consists of (1) piece of correspondence written by the Keysville, Virginia clerk to William Gaulding in 1978 and (52) pieces of correspondence written by Betty Tipton to William Gaulding.

Biographical / historical:

Elizabeth "Betty" Hodges Tipton was born in 1927 to Dr. John A. Tipton and Elizabeth F. Tipton. She graduated from [then] State Teachers College in Farmville in 1949 and subsequently earned her master's degree from James Madison University. For many years Betty Tipton wrote articles for both the Charlotte Gazette and Farmville Herald newspapers. In the late 1970s, Betty Tipton began corresponding with William Gaulding of Topeka, Kansas, primarily on the subject of Gaulding family genealogy. Through their correspondence, which continued for 20+ years, they were able to assemble a comprehensive genealogical history of the Gaulding family in Charlotte County and Prince Edward County, Virginia.

This collection of correspondence was donated to the Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society Archives in June 2019 by Nancy Anacker of Green Valley, Arizona.
