Elizabeth "Betty" Hodges Tipton was born in 1927 to Dr. John A. Tipton and Elizabeth F. Tipton. She graduated from [then] State Teachers College in Farmville in 1949 and subsequently earned her master's degree from James Madison University. For many years Betty Tipton wrote articles for both the Charlotte Gazette and Farmville Herald newspapers. In the late 1970s, Betty Tipton began corresponding with William Gaulding of Topeka, Kansas, primarily on the subject of Gaulding family genealogy.
