Scope and content:

The beanie in this collection, which dates to ca. 1940, was worn by Gertrude T. Wright while a freshman at State Teachers College.

Biographical / historical:

Gertrude Thornhill Wright of Lexington, Virginia attended State Teachers College from 1940 to 1944. While a student at State Teachers College, she was a member of Le Cercle Francais, the YWCA, the Athletic Association, and the Commercial Club.

Custodial history:

This freshman "rat cap" beanie, which belonged to Gertrude T. Wright while a student at State Teachers College, was subsequently acquired by Nancy Shelton during her tenure with Longwood University's Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when this collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
