Ann Elizabeth Mann of Richmond, Virginia was born in 1913 to William A. and Laura G. Mann. In 1934, she transferred from Richmond Normal School to State Teachers College in Farmville, Virginia, and graduated in 1935 with a degree in Elementary Education. While a student at State Teachers College, Mann was a member of the College Choir, YWCA, and the Athletic Association. After graduation, Ann Elizabeth Mann taught for many years in the Richmond public school system.
