The materials in this collection, which date from 1915 to 1919, consist of ephemeral items such as scrapbook pages, programs, photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Ruth Serpell of Farmville, Virginia was born in 1897 to George M. and Almeda B. Serpell. In 1911, she enrolled in then-State Female Normal School and earned her diploma in 1917. While a student at State Female Normal School, she was a member of the Athenian Literary Society and the Champion Tennis Club. Serpell's father, George M. was at one time the owner of Farmville's Prince Edward Hotel.

Custodial history:

The items in this collection were accumulated and created by Ruth Serpell while a student at State Female Normal School. In 2009, Martha S. Coffman, a descendant of Ruth Serpell, donated this collection to the Longwood University Department of Alumni Relations. It is unknown when the collection was transferred to the Greenwood Library Archives.
