Scope and content:

The collection documents the activities of the Alliance of Women in Architecture (AWA) and its transition into the Women in Architecture (WIA) Committee of the AIA New York Chapter, as well as related AIA New York State initiatives, primarily dating from 1992 to 1998. Materials reflect the committee's governance, administration, public programming, advocacy, financial management, membership activities, professional development, and outreach efforts.

Records include meeting minutes, agendas, committee files, correspondence, reports, financial records, membership materials, conference and event planning files, newsletters, publications, articles, research materials, architectural reference resources, promotional materials, and legislative and government affairs documentation. The collection also documents major initiatives including the Lecture and Conversation Series, Women Patrons, Project Punch List, Connections: A Forum for Work by Women, and Projections: A Celebration of Work by Women, as well as exhibitions, newspaper clippings, and reference materials relating to women architects, architectural practice, and the advancement of women within the profession.

Biographical / historical:

The Alliance of Women in Architecture (AWA) was founded in New York City in 1972 as an independent professional organization dedicated to promoting the work of women architects and supporting their professional advancement through exhibitions, lectures, publications, networking, and educational programs. Established during a period of increasing advocacy for gender equity within the architectural profession, the organization sought to increase the visibility of women architects and create opportunities for professional collaboration and leadership.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the AWA organized exhibitions, public programs, and publications highlighting the contributions of women architects. Among its most significant initiatives was Built By Women (1982), a publication documenting architectural work by women in the New York area. The project included a Midtown Manhattan walking tour, panel discussions, and the exhibition Alliance of Women in Architecture, 1972–1982 at the Urban Center in New York City. The exhibition and publication later inspired similar "Built By Women" exhibitions organized by architectural institutions, nonprofit organizations, and design firms.

In 1992, under the leadership of AIA New York Chapter President Frances Halsband,the first woman to serve as president of the chapter (1991–1992), the Alliance of Women in Architecture became part of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter and adopted the name Women in Architecture (WIA) Committee. As an official committee of AIA New York, WIA continued its mission of advancing women in architecture through advocacy, mentorship, professional development, networking, public programming, and leadership opportunities.

During the 1990s, the committee expanded its work through civic engagement and educational initiatives. Major programs included Project Punch List, which adapted the architectural punch list process into a framework for community action and stewardship of the built environment, as well as Connections: A Forum for Work by Women, Projections: A Celebration of Work by Women, the Lecture and Conversation Series, and Women Patrons. Through these initiatives, the committee promoted the work of women architects while encouraging public engagement, professional recognition, and gender equity within the architectural profession.

The processing, arrangement, and description of the Alliance of Women in Architecture was completed in summer of 2026.

Arrangement:

The records are arranged into five series: Administrative Records; Programs and Initiatives; Advocacy and Professional Activities; Publications and Communications; and Reference and Resource Materials. Administrative Records are further divided into Governance, Membership, Committees, Meetings, and Financial Records. Programs and Initiatives are organized by major Women in Architecture programs and events. Advocacy and Professional Activities contain records relating to legislation, government affairs, public relations, and continuing education. Publications and Communications include newsletters, correspondence, and organizational publications. Reference and Resource Materials consist of collected publications, research files, exhibition materials, architectural resources, and documentation relating to women in architecture. Materials are arranged chronologically within subseries whenever possible.
