Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains a letter written on November 13, 1864, by Edwin L. Burdick, addressed to an E.C. Morse. The letter includes a description of Edwin's position as a "Regimental Forage Master and Quartermaster's Clerk," which involved issuing grain to the regiment companies. He writes about Confederate bushwhackers and a recent interaction a regiment had with them. This collection includes a transcript.

Biographical / historical:

Edwin Lewis Burdick was born August 15, 1841, to Lewis and Melissa Burdick. He enlisted into the Union army in 1864, during the American Civil War, and served in the 10th New York Cavalry. He died February 18, 1901, in New York.
