This collection contains a letter written by Mary Cole Meriwether on September 3, 1847, sent to Nannie W. Read in Roanoke, Virginia. The letter was written for Mary to practice writing and includes updates on Mary's family, local news, and future traveling. Collection includes a transcript of the letter.
- Biographical / historical:

Mary Coles Meriwether was born October 24, 1833, in Bedsford County, Virginia, and was around 13 years old when writing the letter. In the letter she mentions that she is attending Mrs. Steptoes's school and that she is working on her writing skills. Mary died March 10, 1910.
