The 30th Virginia Infantry was organized in June of 1861 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The soldiers that comprised the regiment were primarily from Fredericksburg and the counties surrounding the city. During the war, the regiment was assigned to Generals J. G. Walkers's and Corse's brigades. The regiment stayed in Virginia for a period until they were set on detached duty in Tennessee following the Siege of Suffolk.
