The "Sawmilling in Carroll County, Virginia as Recalled by Ezra Martin" Typescript is a recounting by Ezra Martin to his grandson Tommy Largen about his life working in the sawmill industry in Carroll County, Virginia. It contains information about Martin's birth, childhood, marriage, family, work life, and retirement. The typescript also includes photographs of family and locations.

Biographical / historical:

Simon Ezra Martin was born to John Webb and Sarah (Henley) Martin on June 25, 1895, in Snake Creek, Carroll County, Virginia. He married Eva Goad (1894-1981) on March 4, 1913. They had nine children: Stella, Belva, Gladys, Pauline, Orpha, Hazel, Lorene, and Maggie. In 1916, he bought his first steam-powered sawmill from Cassel Bownam for five hundred dollars. Martin retired from the sawmill industry in 1960. He died on October 1, 1984, and is buried with alongside his wife in C. C. Webb Cemetery in Hillsville.
