Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains a first-hand account of the Battle of the Cumberland Gap, which occurred in September 1863 during the American Civil War. The account was written by Benjamin W. Kelly in 1901 and was dedicated to Lieutenant Colonel McFarland, probably George F. McFarland of the Union Army.

Biographical / historical:

The Battle of the Cumberland Gap occurred between September 7th and 9th, 1863, during the American Civil War. General Ambrose Burnside commanded the Union soldiers and General John Frazer commanded the Confederates. During the battle the Union forces laid siege to the Confederate forces for three days. On the third day of the battle General Burnside arrived and demanded Frazer's surrender. Frazer surrendered his force on September 9th after being told that he would not be recieving any reinforcements.
