Scope and content:

The collection contains a letter written July 20, 1861, by Charles H. Pierce to his mother on the eve of the Battle of First Manassas/Bull Run. Pierce was a member of the United States Marine Corps and was present during the battle. Pierce's letter mentions the activities of his battalion on their march from Washington, D.C. to Manassas Junction. Pierce also mentions how hard the march was and the heat.
