Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection consists of a two-page, printed set of resolutions adopted by the 57th Virginia Regiment on January 30, 1865. Apparently in response to concerns about morale and lack of support for the Confederacy in the course of the war, the resolutions were a sort of reaffirmation of the values of the regiment, its continued willingness to fight, and its confidence in Robert E. Lee. Similar resolutions were adopted by regiments through the Confederate Army in the latter part of the Civil War.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The 57th Regiment, Virginia Infantry was a least partially formed from volunteers in Powhatan, Pittsylvania, and Botetourt counties during September of 1861. The regiment fought in a number of significant campaigns and battles, including Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Appomattox.
