Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains records from the Women's Network at Virginia Tech, dated from about 1973 to 1991. It comprises correspondence, reports, publicity materials, and records related to the administration and the group's support of related causes.

Series I: Chronological files, 1973-1981, 1984-1991, contain records from the collection arranged by academic year, including letters, reports, meeting minutes, and more.

Series II: Publicity and Correspondence, 1978-1984, undated, consists of publicity materials, correspondence, letterhead, articles, newsletters, and "Women's Network News."

Series III: Causes, 1972-1973, 1975-1984, undated, contains information about different causes the Women's Network supported. This includes the Affirmative Action task force, the childcare task force, trying to get a class at Virginia Tech for Women's Studies, fighting for Women's Equity, preventing sexual harassment in the workforce, and more.

Series IV: Administration, 1980-1985, undated, is items related to the administrative side of the organization, such as a progress report, minutes for meetings, and ideas for the network.

Biographical / historical:

The Virginia Tech Women's Network was founded in 1977 within the College of Education, as a branch of the Virginia Women's Network. The goal of the group was to provide support for the university's professional women as well as advocate for an equal voice for women in the university.

Acquisition information:
The Records of the Virginia Tech Women's Network were transferred to Special Collections and University Archives in May 1989, October 1990, and January 2004.
Appraisal information:

The contents of Series I was received in binders. The binders were removed and destroyed. The contents were retained and placed in archival folders.

Processing information:

The processing, arrangement, and description of the Records of the Virginia Tech Women's Network were commenced and completed in February 2020.

This collection is separated into four series:
