Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of individual issues of Virginia newspapers. In some cases, this is a single issue; in other cases, there may be multiple issues. Newspapers represent cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth and date from the start of the Civil War up through the 1970s.

Acquisition information:
The newspapers in this collection have been donated to Special Collections over time. Additional materials may be added in the future.
Processing information:

An inventory of the newspapers was created during the summer of 2011. Description of the collection was completed in July 2012. Additional newspapers added in June 2017.

Arrangement:

The physical collection is arranged alphabetically by city or town. The contents list below is organized by city or town and contains a list of paper titles in each box. The city or town of origination is included with the title. Under each title is a list of holdings. The general format is "date, volume, issue number." Some titles may only list dates or dates and volumes.

A spreadsheet with information about specific holdings (titles, dates, volume and issue numbers, cities/towns of publication, and, when available, cost and editors) can be downloaded online. The spreadsheets allows for easy sorting by any category.
