- Scope and content:

The collection consists of a handwritten notebook with math equations and problems from Botetourt County, Virginia, created around 1857. A majority of the problems are algebratic equations but there are also a number of word problems included. A signature on the inside cover reads Samuel Burger.
- Biographical / historical:

Samuel Burger (1820-1889) of Botetourt County, Virginia, was a captain in the Confederate army and served as an aide for Jefferson Davis during the American Civil War. He also served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1877 to 1879 and was Botetourt's County Surveyor from 1870 until his death in 1889. In addition, he was a teacher and farmer.
