Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains a timetable issued by the Norfolk Southern Railroad, with an effective date of August 28, 1938. The timetable describes a route from Norfolk, Virginia to Raleigh, North Carolina through Elizabeth City, Washington, Greenville and Wilson, listing all intermediate points and times of arrival and departure. Also included is promotional material for Virginia Beach and The Cavalier resort hotel.

Biographical / historical:

The Norfolk Southern Railroad was founded under the reorganization of the Norfolk and Southern Railway in 1910. The line served southeastern Virginia and eastern North Carolina. The company went into receivership in 1932 and was reorganized in 1942 as Norfolk Southern Railway. It was purchased by the Southern Railway in 1974. The Southern Railway combined with the Norfolk & Western Railway to form Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1982.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad Timetable was donated to Special Collections in 2004.
