Background

Scope and content:

The Virginia General Assembly Transportation Bills contain five bills from the Virginia General Assembly relating to turnpikes around Wythe and Grayson counties, Virginia and the associated companies. The bills disucss the creation of the Grayson-Raleigh Turnpike and the Wytheville and Grayson Turnpike. The first bill, dated January 25, 1848, specified how the incorporated company was to be set up. The other four bills, dated January 25, 1858, denote increasing the stock, relief of fines, and authorize completion of the project.

Biographical / historical:

Grayson and Wythe counties are situated in the New River Valley in southwestern Virginia. Wythe County was founded in 1790, Grayson County was founded in 1793 from part of Wythe County. Many turnpikes were built through these counties in the 1840s and 1850s to connect valuable mineral resources as well a rural towns and cities.The Grayson-Raleigh (WV) Turnpike and the Wytheville Turnpike were completed around 1860.
