Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a poem by Aaron Snavely, titled "Remember Sarah Jane" and published on a single sheet of paper. In 33 lines, the poem laments the loss of the poet's parents and the recent death and burial of his "young partner."

Biographical / historical:

A. Aaron Snavely, the son of Joseph (1791-1861) and Sophia Weaver Snavely (1802-1862), was born in Wythe County, Virginia on September 23, 1825. Snavely practiced medicine in the Black Lick - Rural Retreat area of Wythe County. He married Sarah Jane Pickle (1833-1863), the daughter of Phillip and Ann Pickle, and the couple had four children. Following Sarah Jane's death, Snavely married her sister, Barbara Emeline, with whom he had another two children. A. Aaron Snavely died on February 27, 1880.
