Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains eight photographs of Buchanan, Virginia, taken around the 1890s. Seen in the photographs are views of Main Street, Water Street, the James River at the railroad station, Martin's store, buildings on north bank of James River, and Pattonsburg.

Biographical / historical:

Located in Botetourt County, Virginia, the town of Buchanan was established in 1811. The town was consolidated with Pattonsburg, on the opposite side of the James River, and incorporated in 1882.

Acquisition information:
The Buchanan, Virginia Photographs were purchased by Special Collections and University Archives in 1996.
Processing information:

The processing and description of the Buchanan, Virginia Photographs commenced and was completed in October, 2023.
