The collection contains two speeches by Walter H. Beal, Sr., in 1886, a valedictory address to the class of 1886 and a farewell address to the Lee Literary Society. The valedictory speech is in a folder with the title, "The Golden Ages are before us," and was given on Friday, April 30th, 1886. The farewell speech, according to the note on the back of the last page, was given at the final meeting of the Lee Literary Society in June 1886.

Walter H. Beal is listed in the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College Catalog of Officers and Students for 1882-1883 and 1884-1885 (no 1883-1884 or 1885-1886 catalogs are available). The 1886-1887 catalog lists Beal among the alumni from 1886 with a degree in Mining Engineering. All three of the catalogs list his home as Hanover, Virginia.
