Background

Scope and content:

The Sarah Buchanan Preston Land Deed is a manuscript copy of a land transfer indenture statement for lands in Russell, Tazewell, and Scott counties, Virginia. The land was sold by Preston to John and Edward Fulton of Washington County, Virginia, in 1835.

Biographical / historical:

Sarah Buchanan Campbell Preston was born to William and Elizabeth Henry Campbell in 1778. In 1793, she married Francis Preston (1765-1835), the son of Colonel William Preston. Together they had 10 children. In 1834, Sarah inherited more than 13,000 acres in Washington County, Virginia. It seems likely that land from this inheritance is part of the land sold in the 1835 deed. She died in 1946 and is buried in Smyth County, Virginia.
