Abstract:
The Amon W. Updike Correspondence consists of photocopies of five letters from Updike while camped in New Kent, Chesterfield, and Henrico counties, Virginia, to his sister, Phebe Arthur, during the American Civil War. Also included are photocopies of letters from Phebe Arthur to her husband Henry, letters from Henry to Phebe and to other family members, and a letter from J.O. Hensley, Arthur's captain, informing Phebe of her husband's death.

Background

Scope and content:

The Amon W. Updike Correspondence consists of photocopies of five letters (1864-1865) from Updike while camped in New Kent, Chesterfield, and Henrico counties, Virginia, to his sister, Phebe Arthur, during the American Civil War. The collection also includes photocopies of letters (1861-1862) from Phebe Arthur to her husband Henry; letters from Henry to Phebe and to other family members; and a letter from J.O. Hensley, Arthur's captain, informing Phebe of her husband's death.

Biographical / historical:

Amon W. Updike was a Confederate soldier in Company I, 53rd Virginia Regiment, Bartons Brigade, in the American Civil War. He first enlisted and mustered on April 21, 1862, at Suffolk, Virginia; was hospitalized on June 15, and again on August 31. Updike deserted on May 9, 1863, and returned on November 20. He was imprisoned on April 2, 1865, and died on April 6 at Point Lookout, a Union prisoner of war camp in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He is buried at the Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery.
