Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection includes 22 letters written by J. Harry McBroom from October 6, 1904, to August 14, 1905, to Thyrza Fugate detailing campus life at Virginia Polytechnica Institute. McBroom was a sophomore during 1904-1905. The collection also contains three pieces of sheet music: "Sing Me A Song of the South," "The Blue and The Gray," and "Gen. Robert E. Lee's Quick March."
- Biographical / historical:
-
J. Harry McBroom attended Virginia Polytechnica Institute from 1904-1905. It is unclear if he graduated as he is not listed in the graduating classes of 1906, 1907, 1908, or 1909. He was from Abingdon, Virginia.
McBroom is probably John Harry McBroom (1884-1946), son of James William and Henrietta Jackson McBroom. He married Mary Adella Holton (sometimes called Della) on July 22, 1915, and the couple had four children. On various census records, McBroom is listed as working as a miller at a flour mill, land agent for a mining company, and bookkeeper and lived in Glade Spring, Abingdon, and Roanoke. He is buried in the Sinking Spring Cemetery in Abingdon.
