Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a single small account book maintained by Jacob Morgan, a resident of Alexandria, Virginia. The book is comprised of two distinct sections. The first section contains entries for Morgan's transactions with the Union Bank of Alexandria from 1814 to 1819. The second section, seemingly written in a different hand, appears to record transactions in which farm produce was traded for sewn goods. The entries describe prices due for various articles of clothing purchased from individuals and the credit realized for such goods as bacon and butter.

Biographical / historical:

That Jacob Morgan held an account with the Union Bank of Alexandria, Virginia, indicates that he was a resident of that city. Alexandria newspapers of the era make frequent mention of a Jacob Morgan in local business affairs. A Jacob Morgan offered sheep for sale in an 1811 Alexandria newspaper advertisement. Jacob Morgan is listed among the directors of the Fire Insurance Company of Alexandria, Va. in 1816 and served as its president in 1820. Jacob Morgan was a member of Alexandria's city council, representing the 2nd ward, in 1817-1818. Jacob Morgan was appointed justice of the peace by President Monroe in 1819. Whether these articles all refer to the same individual, or whether any of them refer to the creator of the account book, is unknown.
