Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a single daybook maintained by William W. Gardner, a general store merchant in Lafayette (Montgomery County), Virginia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. According to Virginia's Montgomery County, W. W. Gardner operated a store in the county's Lafayette community during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The 1880 census lists a 7-year-old William W. Gardner living in the Montgomery County home of his father, miller William H. Gardner. The 1920 census includes a 48-year-old retail merchant named Walter [sic] W. Gardner living in Montgomery County's Alleghany District with 38-year-old wife Nora E. Gardner and a five-year-old son named W. J. Cannon Gardner. All had been born in Virginia, with parents born in Virginia. A 58-year-old retail merchant named William W. Gardner is recorded by the 1930 census, living in Alleghany District with wife Nora and son William J. C. No further record could be located.
