Papers, 1889-1959, of C. P. Barnett (1864-1942) and F. H. Hammond (1860-1927) of Covington, Virginia, regarding stock they owned in various coal mines in West Virginia, mainly operated by J. C. Sullivan (1868-1948) of Wyoming County, West Virginia, including correspondence regarding stockholders meetings, proxies for voting, financial reports, and prospectuses of the companies. Also includes papers, 1944-1959, of F. H. Hammond, Jr. (1901-1981), regarding the Hammond Coal Company in Covington, as well as materials on other coal companies.

Charles Pickett Barnett was born 20 March 1864 in Montgomery County, Virginia, to Charles Thomas Barnett (1825-1897) and Susan Gatewood Deyerle Barnett (1827-1887). He became a civil engineer and settled in Covington, Virginia, living with his sister and her family. Barnett served as president of Citizens National Bank and of the Chamber of Commerce. He died 10 June 1942 in Alleghany County, Virginia, and was buried in East Hill Cemetery in Salem, Virginia.
Charles Pickett Barnett's sister Martha Deyerle Barnett (1861-1931) married Francis Holloway Hammond of Covington. Hammond was born 18 February 1860 to George Wilson Hammond (1828-1864) and Emaline Mason Scott Hammond (1833-1908). Hammond was a merchant and salesman. He married first Mary L. McAllister (1868-1888) 29 November 1887. He married Martha Barnett in 1893 and they had 4 children including Frank H. Hammond, Jr. Hammond, Sr., died 23 November 1927 at United Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington.
Frank H. Hammond, Jr., was born 9 March 1901 in Covington. Hammond attended public schools, Augusta Military Academy, and the University of Virginia. Like his uncle, C. P. Barnett, he became a civil engineer. Later Hammond operated the Hammond Coal Company in Covington. He married Pauline Wills Revercomb (1904-1989) 1 July 1933 and they had four children. Hammond died in Alleghany County 28 November 1981 and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington.
