Records, 1786-1873, incudes the following records: County Court Minutes, 1806-1873; County Court Appeals volume 2, 1812-1848; Superior Court of Law Office Judgments, 1809-1831; County Court Office Judgments number 4, 1817-1833; Circuit Court Minuite Book, 1853-1871; Superior Court of Law Docket Book, 1821-1830; Superior Court of Law Minute Books, 1809-1828; Huguenot Township Tax Book, 1871; Spencer Township Tax Book, 1871; Macon Township Tax Book, 1871; and a record book that includes Free Negro Register, Marriage Certificates, Register of Boats, and Estray Book, 1786-1832.

Biographical / historical:

Powhatan County was named for the paramount chief of the Powhatan Indians in the tidewater of Virginia in the late sixteenth and early years of the seventeenth century. It was formed from Cumberland County in 1777, and part of Chesterfield County was added in 1850. The county seat is Powhatan.
