Giles County (Va.) Giles County was named for William Branch Giles, a US Senator, Representative and Governor of Virginia. The county was formed in 1806 from Montgomery, Monroe (now in West Virginia) and Tazewell counties. Additional land was added from Wythe County (1808), Tazewell County (1826 and 1836), Monroe County (now in West Virginia) (1829) and Mercer County (now in West Virginia) (1841).
