Westmoreland County (Va.) Land Records, 1695-1981, undated, consist of 1 box of Oyster Inspectors' Reports, 1 vol. of General Index to Deeds, 1 UNPROCESSED box of Deeds from 17th and 18th centuries, petitions of trustees to sell land and maps (Colonial Beach map from 1891 is missing), 3 UNPROCESSED boxes of Deeds, List of Conveyances, Appointments/Changes of Trustees, Processioners' Records, Plats and Surveys, 2 map tubes of Surveys and Maps which also contain Road and Bridge Records--including a county road map and a road survey and 1 map tube of Oyster Plats.

Biographical / historical:

Westmoreland County was named for the English county. It was formed from Northumberland County in 1653. The county seat is Montross.

Many loose papers were burned during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Volumes that record deeds, court orders (except an order book for the period 1764-1776) and wills exist.

Acquisition information:
These items came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court records from Westmoreland County. Boxes 1164997-1164999 have Accession Number 41892.
