Background

Scope and content:

These records contain military warrant 3753 for 3,000 acres, issued to George Washington on February 14, 1785. The warrant was originally issued by royal governor Lord Dunmore to John Roots for his French and Indian War military service. Roots assigned it to Washington on February 14, 1774, and it was then reissued in Washington's name by a resolution of the General Assembly passed December 30, 1784. The warrant was not endorsed by Washington.

A copy of the U.S. government publication, "Hearing Before a Subcommittee of the Committee on the Public Lands, House of Representatives, on Bills Relating to the Estate of General George Washington, March 25 and May 23, 1912," is included with this entry. Warrant 3753 was a significant document in the hearing. The hearing included testimony from Lawrence Washington, a descendent of Augustine Washington, and Congressman Elmer A. Morse of Wisconsin.

Biographical / historical:

The act which established the previous Land Office next hit passed the General Assembly on 22 June 1779. The register was the head of the Office and was appointed by joint ballot of both houses of the legislature.
