Scope and content:

These records contain accounts of a personal nature for individuals associated with the Land Office, including William R. Gaines, Charles Lewis, Stafford H. Parker, Hawes R. Sutton, and John Tucker. The records include bills receipts for clothing and household repairs, lists of accounts, bonds, and survey fees. The records are from the years 1791-1798; 1822; 1860-1861; 1867; 1877; 1881; 1887-1891.

They also contain a register of the 1906-1923 copies of annual reports to the auditor, listing grants issued in Virginia during the years 1906, 1908, 1910-1916, 1919-1921, and 1923. The register lists the name of the grantee, book and page, county, date of grant, number of acres, and locality of land.

Biographical / historical:

The act which established the previous Land Office next hit passed the General Assembly on 22 June 1779. The register was the head of the Office and was appointed by joint ballot of both houses of the legislature.

Accession LOI 16 transferred by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, 1948.
