Scope and content:

Minutes and related attachments documenting the meetings, activities, discussions, policy decisions, and recommendations of the Virginia Boxing, Martial Arts and Professional Wrestling Advisory Board. Includes official board minutes, as well section meeting minutes, agendas and other meeting materials. May also include informal fact finding hearing minutes.

Biographical / historical:

The Virginia State Boxing and Wrestling Commission was established by an act of the General Assembly approved March 29, 1934 to direct, manage, and control all aspects related to wrestling, boxing and sparring in the Commonwealth. The name was change to the Virginia Athletic Commission by an act passed on March 11, 1952, and then to the Virginia Athletic Board in 1985. In 1998 the General Assembly passed legislation creating the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Program operating under the Dept. of Professional and Occupational Regulation to handle the duties of the earlier commissions and board. In 2007, the Board was changed to add martial arts to its charge.
