Background

Scope and content:

Charles City County (Va.) Journal of the Board of District School Trustees for School District No. 1 in Chickahominy Township, 1870-1886, consists of minutes and accounts. The district seems later to be referred to as Chickahominy District, but it is unclear whether this refers to a magisterial or a school district. Minutes from 1870-1879 and 1884 contain information such as the establishment of white and colored schools, taxes for schools, building of schools, teacher contracts and housing, length of school terms, qualifications of superintendents, and teacher pay. The remainder of the volume contains school related accounts dating from 1870-1886. The accounts do not appear to be in any kind of order and have no index.

Biographical / historical:

Charles City County was named for Charles I of England and was one of the eight shires established in 1634.

Records have been destroyed at various times. The most damage occurred during the Civil War when the records were strewn through the woods in a rainstorm. A few pre-Civil War volumes such as deed books, will books, minute books, and order books exist.
