Background

Scope and content:

Lunenburg County (Va.) Lists of property lost by result of war, 1865-1868, are lists by owners of slaves who were taken by Union soldiers during the Civil War. The lists include slave names and ages. The list of M.A. Wilson includes items other than slaves that he claims Union soldiers also took from him including a mule, a mare, and one mile of fence.

Biographical / historical:

Lunenburg County was named for King George II, duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, a German possession of England's Hanoverian kings. It was formed from Brunswick County by an act that took effect on 1 May 1746. Part of Lunenburg County was added in 1777.

An act passed by the General assembly on 1866 January 20 required clerks of counties and corporations to keep record of property lost during the Civil War including enslaved people who were emancipated. Clerks were to record this information in a book kept for that purpose and the original papers stored in a safe place.
