Madison County (Va.) Organization Records, 1909-1916, is comprised of various records created by groups in Madison County. The records consist of a minute book.

Historical Information:The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F) is an altruistic fraternal organization derived from similar English oddfellow service organizations that came into being in the 1700s. It was founded in the U.S. in Baltimore in 1819. The organization has traditionally supported a variety of philanthropic causes, including helping the sick and educating orphans.

Scope and Content:Lodge No. 300 Indpendent Order of Odd Fellows Records, 1919-1916 consists of a minute book. The minutes document attendance at weekly meetings at the lodge in Criglersville, election of officers, financial transactions, and donations to charitable causes. The lodge rented the under hall to a skating rink in 1909. Also contains Lodge letterhead, printed materials from regional and national Odd Fellows organizations, and five printed copies of lodge bylaws, 1905. No index.

Context for Record Type: Organization Records, both volumes and loose records, are in some cases transferred to the Library of Virginia as components of court record transfers. These organization records in some cases were simply stored in the local court building for safe keeping by business owners. In other cases, organization records (particularly ledgers, account books, etc.) may have been filed in a court case as an exhibit. These organization record exhibits appeared both in chancery causes and in judgments, these records serving as exhibits for business dissolution cases, debt suits, and contract disputes.

Locality History: Madison County was named for James Madison, a Virginian statesman, author of the United States Constitution, and member of Congress when the county was formed from Culpeper County by a statute adopted on 4 December 1792. This was the second Virginia county to be named for future president Madison. The county court first met on 23 May 1793. The county seat is Madison.

These items came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers from Madison County under an undated accession.

Prior to 2025, the various organization records in this collection were originally described as individual records, but they have been consolidated into one large organization record for the locality. Since 2025, these records additionally include identified but not processed records.

The Lodge No. 300 Independent Order of Odd Fellows, 1909-1916 Minute Book was previously cataloged as the Criglersville Lodge Minute Book.
