Scope and content:

Records, 1775-1824, of Spotsylvania County Circuit Court consist of a bill and related documents in the chancery suit Executor of Julia Smith versus the Administrators of James Smith and others (n.d.) and other miscellaneous court records.

Biographical / historical:

Spotsylvania County was formed in 1720 from Essex, King William, and King and Queen Counties.

Created by an act of 1720 to take effect on May 1, 1721. Many loose county court papers prior to 1839, when the courthouse moved from Fredericksburg to Spotsylvania Courthouse, are missing. Volumes that record deeds, court orders, and wills exist. The district court, superior court, and circuit court records of Spotsylvania County from 1813 to 1889 are in Fredericksburg.

The Robert Alonzo Brock Collection was filmed by The Huntington Library in cooperation with The Library of Virginia with funding provided by The Library of Virginia Foundation with the support of The Roller- Bottimore Foundation and The Robins Foundation. Microfilm received 15 April 2004.
