Scope and content:

Records, 1804-1855, of Norfolk County Circuit Court consist of wills (1824, 1833, 1855); Commonwealth claims (1804, 1821); and a deposition in a suit heard in the Court of the United States, Fifth Circuit (1810.) The deposition relates to a survey taken in Dismal Swamp.

Wills include Robert Manlove (1824), Joseph Pell (1833), and Henry Selden (1855.)

Biographical / historical:

Norfolk County was formed in 1691 from Lower Norfolk County. It was probably named by Adam Thoroughgood for his native county in England. Norfolk County became extinct in 1963, when it was consolidated with the city of South Norfolk to form the city of Chesapeake.

Acquisition information:
The Robert Alonzo Brock Collection was filmed by The Huntington Library in cooperation with The Library of Virginia with funding provided by The Library of Virginia Foundation with the support of The Roller- Bottimore Foundation and The Robins Foundation. Microfilm received 15 April 2004.
