R.D. Huffard Physician Account Book, 1893-1901, records the accounts of individual patients including African-Americans. Each account lists dates of transactions, charges and payments for visits to patients, medication, and medical services such as setting broken bones, obstetrical surgery including abortions, and treatments for sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea.

R.D. (Robert Davidson) Huffard was born in Wythe County in 1850. He studied medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and established a practice in Smyth County. In 1891, he moved to Tazewell County where he practiced until his death in 4 Novemebr 1898.
The account book was used as an exhibit in the chancery suit Foote and Johnson and others versus Administrator of R.D. Huffard and others heard in the Tazewell County Circuit Court.
