Account book, 1860-1864, of a mill that records the individual accounts of customers. Each account lists transactions in chronological order. Information found includes name of customer, date of transactions, goods purchased or services rendered, quantity of goods purchased, amount paid, and form of payment. The mill produced flour, plaster, and meal and also served as a sawmill. Forms of payment include cash, credit, labor, and barter of items such as rye, corn, wheat, and meat. There are several entries dated March 1864, that state the amount of wheat, corn, etc., impressed for the use of the Eleventh Regiment, Virginia Cavalry. The volume includes an index listing the names of customers in alphabetical order and the page number where their accounts can be found.
A portion of the account was used as a daybook. It records transactions in chronological order from May 30, 1863 to January 23, 1864. Information found in entries includes date of transaction, form of transaction, name of customer, goods purchased, quantity of goods purchased, amount owed, payments received for goods purchased, form of payment, and expenses paid by mill owners such as the Confederate tax.
