Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains four copies of the Harrisville Herald newsletter, a series of portrait and snapshot photographs related to St. John's Church, a song book, and three record books associated with St. John's Woman's Guild.

They document the history of the church (St. John's Reformed/UCC) and the community of Harrisville, Virginia which existed around the church.

Biographical / historical:

Harrisville, Virginia is a small community located approximately one mile east of Toms Brook, Virginia.

St. John's Church, formerly Reformed, later UCC, is the primary surviving structure in the community. Dating to 1875, the church was rebuilt in 1946. The "Harrisville Herald" was a newspaper/newsletter sponsored by the church and distributed to the community. It was printed originally by Rev. L. Nevin Wilson, minister at St. John's from 1914-1915.

Sara Borden is a lifelong member of St. John's Church and a collector of Harrisville, Virginia related materials.

Donated by Sara A. Borden of Harrisville (Toms Brook), Virginia.
Processing information:

Materials were originally received in plastic sleeves of unknown origin (photographs and documents) and stacked (ledgers). Documents were removed from sleeves and foldered. Photographs were removed from sleeves and rehoused in archival photograph sleeves and then foldered. Record and scrapbooks were wrapped, labeled, and placed in appropriate housing.

Unrelated and duplicate newspaper clippings were disposed of.

Arrangement:

Items are arranged chronologically by creation date in the finding aid. Undated items are at the end.

Items are stored by type on the box with folders, arranged chronoligically on the top, and record books on the bottom.
