The John F. Banks Collection contains correspondence, news clippings, photographs, and school publications of Principal Joseph F. Banks. Principal Banks was principal from 1954-1966. The news clippings are about Christiansburg Institute and school desegregation. The correspondence is between Principal Banks and the Friends Freedmen's Association members, Board of Control members, and other educators. The programs were created for school activities, most notably the dedication of the Scattergood Gym in 1953.

John F. Banks served as principal of Christiansburg Industrial Institute from 1949 to 1966. He was the school's last principal before it closed in 1966 following desegregation. Banks was a graduate of Wilberforce University in Ohio and Hampton Institute in Virginia.
